Social media accounts in the plastics industry worth following

Nov 19, 2023

Here's a rundown of a few social media accounts from the plastics industry worth following.

Advanced Pedestals LLC, an injection molder and rotational molder of accessories for the electric and electrical systems market such as protective covers, uses Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn to feature its employees' accomplishments, recognize volunteer efforts in its hometown of Gainesville, Texas, and highlight its accomplishments in production and sustainability.

And for a dash of fun, its "Ask API" shows off employees in a video, but it also gets into serious topics such as, "Who has the better beard?" and, in one recent video, "What would you do if you got home and found a penguin in the freezer?"

Connecticut-based plastics and liquid silicone rubber molder Dymotek Corp. honors employees for work anniversaries, recognizes new hires and promotes its presence at conferences and trade shows on its LinkedIn page. Beyond that, it uses YouTube — and cross-posts to other social media — to publish short video interviews with employees that help put a human face on the company and attract future workers.

German mold making components maker Hasco Hasenclever GmbH + Co. works across multiple social media platforms to get its message out, whether that message is to recruit employees, highlight its technology or show off Easter bunnies handed out at a home for foster children.

For International Women's Day in March, it celebrated female colleagues, while Girls' Day in May gave it a chance to highlight a range of career opportunities.

"The profession of a precision mechanic … is not only interesting for boys but also a good choice for girls," it said on Facebook.

Wisconsin-based Isometric Micro Molding Inc.'s LinkedIn photos make it easy to explain just how small the parts are that it molds.

"Where sharpness meets economies of scale, micro molding is hitting precision home runs," CEO Donna Bibber noted in a recent post.

The company's social media posts also link job openings, trade show visits and new hires.

Longtime industry executive Robert Lilienfeld is now the executive director of the Sustainable Packaging Research, Information and Networking Group. He uses his LinkedIn profile to feature his take on research and essays on what works in plastics for sustainability, where it can use improvement and comments on hot topics in the media.

Myers Industries Inc. maintains active social media profiles for its business units, including rotomolder and thermoformer Elkhart Plastics, bulk handling packaging maker Buckhorn Ameri-Kart and Trilogy Plastics.

Elkhart Plastics' LinkedIn profile provides a view of the company that covers technology, its employees, new products and its contribution to animal shelters during National Pet Month in April.

linkedin.com/company/plastics-machinery-group-inc-Plastics Machinery Group Inc. of Bedford, Ohio, deals with a lot of different type of plastics production equipment. To stand out, it uses video — including time-lapse video of equipment arriving and leaving the site — along with images of machinery in production and profiles of sales executives and other employees.

Resin distributor PolySource LLC uses personal stories to promote its business on LinkedIn — that means not only promoting employees' work but also providing the background behind its ability to solve problems.

There are links to case studies from PolySource's response team, "The Fixers," and "Cliff's Chronicles," with Cliff Watkins, director of applications development, exploring trouble-shooting opportunities at a customer's plant.

Watkins noted that a process technician at the plant "was fighting an uphill battle because the material had been selected, not for its performance ... but because it worked in various other components that were critical. The assumption was that it would also work in this noncritical application."

Eric Roegner, in addition to serving as president of Amcor Rigid Packaging, does more than just talk about sustainability. On his LinkedIn page, he documents the trash he finds as he travels, which he also picks up and puts into the recycling bin.

"It was graduation weekend [at the] University of Michigan and my normal weekly PET bottle pickup count tripled," Roegner noted in one recent post. "Interestingly, only one of the nine was a [carbonated soft drink] bottle. … Now if Michigan would only extend the deposit to water bottles as well."

Compounder Washington Penn's sustainability message on LinkedIn covers big industry issues such as recyclability and the advantages of lightweighting, along with featuring volunteer clean-up efforts by employees and the work done by engineers and laboratory technicians to improve sustainability.

On Arbor Day, it noted its "cross-company" team had planted more than 30,000 trees.

"This has not only helped to improve water quality but also recharged the Earth with less runoff and erosion and has the potential to sequester nearly a million pounds of carbon annually," it noted.
